Eagle's Nest on the Obersalzberg
Former National Socialist quarter in Berchtesgadener LandHistorically impressive excursion destination in Berchtesgaden
The Eagle’s Nest lies high above Berchtesgaden. Simply getting to the once representative building of the national socialists is an impressive feat. Today the massive building, which lies at a high alpine 1,834 meters, is home to a mountain restaurant with a panorama view of the Alps.
The Eagle’s Nest and its history

The road to the Obersalzberg is impressive thanks to its structural uniqueness: in just one bend, you overcome 700 metres of altitude. Since 1952, the Kehlsteinstrasse has been closed to private transport. Since then, a special bus brings the visitors to the Kehlstein car park.
By lift to the Kehlsteinhaus
From there, you proceed with your adventure on foot through a 124m-long tunnel to the lift. The lift cabin has been kept as original as possible and features a grandiose, mirrored brass trim. In just 41 seconds, the modern lift brings tourists directly inside the 124m high “Eagle’s Nest”.
Guided tours
The Eagle’s Nest is open from the beginning of May to the end of October and can be visited as part of a guided tour.
Hike up the Obersalzberg

A beautiful hiking path, some of which traverses forest climbs and asphalt paths, also leads to the Eagle’s Nest.
It is an approx. 2-hour walk from the “Ofener Boden” to the Eagle’s Nest and to the peak. At the top, you will also find the Eagle’s Nest circular path, which guarantees impressive views and insights into the mountain landscape.
Exhibition on the history of the Obersalzberg
We also recommend reading the documentation about Obersalzberg at the bus station, where you can get to know the complete significance of the Obersalzberg in relation to National Socialism.
