Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg, built in 1606 by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau as a love gift for Salome Alt, impresses with its history and beauty. Originally called ‘Altenau’, it was given the name ‘Mirabell Palace’ in the 17th century, which means ‘admirable’ and ‘beautiful’. The entire complex, including the baroque Mirabell Gardens with the famous Pegasus Fountain, is a listed building and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Lustgarten is one of the most beautiful sights in Salzburg and is a highlight for fans of the Sound of Music.

Salzburg Palace with years of history

The view from the edge of Mirabell Gardens towards Salzburg's old town with its cathedral and fortress is so beautiful that it is one of the favourite photo motifs in Salzburg for visitors from all over the world. The Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg

To the south of Mirabell Palace in Salzburg is the impressive garden parterre of Mirabell Gardens. At the heart of the symmetrically laid out baroque garden is the ‘Great Fountain Basin’, surrounded by four pairs of figures symbolising the elements of water, fire, air and earth. A highlight of the Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg is the lime tree grove. Between the old trees are ancient statues symbolising the seasons and transience.

Orangery garden and palm house

Another attraction in Salzburg is the Orangery Garden with the Papageno Fountain. The Orangery Garden, which is separated from the main garden by a wall, was planted with citrus trees during the Baroque period. In the cold winter months, the plants were overwintered in the neighbouring palm house of the orangery. Today, the garden and the palm house are open to the public and offer plenty to discover.

The dwarf garden in Mirabell Gardens

On the western side of Mirabell Gardens, a path leads to the Heckentheater, which is used for traditional events in summer. Take a walk through the historic dwarf garden, of which more than half of the original 28 dwarf figures are still preserved today. Since its opening to the public in 1854, Mirabell Gardens has attracted visitors from all over the world. The rose garden with its impressive ornamental rose beds lies to the south of Mirabell Palace. This is a popular photo spot.
