The Mirabell Gardens in Salzburg

Stroll through the baroque sea of flowers

The pleasure garden behind Mirabell Palace in Salzburg is one of the city's most beautiful sights. The basic geometric shape of the Mirabell Gardens is typical of the Baroque period. In the centre of the garden, the Pegasus Fountain with the horse sculpture is a prominent eye-catcher and will make Sound of Music fans reminisce. The gardens and associated buildings are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One garden - many sights

The large garden parterre stretches to the south of Mirabell Palace. In the centre is the "Great Fountain Basin" surrounded by four pairs of figures symbolising the elements of water, fire, air and earth.
At the Lindenhain you will find more ancient statues that symbolise the seasons and transience.

Use by the general public

On the western side of Mirabell Gardens, a path leads to the Heckentheater, which is used for traditional events in summer. Here you should also take a stroll through the dwarf garden, of which only half of the original 28 dwarf figures have been preserved.
Seit seiner Öffnung für die Öffentlichkeit im Jahr 1854 zieht der Mirabellgarten Besucher aus aller Welt an und bleibt eine Attraktion von Salzburg.

The rose garden with its impressive ornamental rose beds is located to the south of Mirabel Castle and is a favourite photo opportunity for visitors to the garden.

Orangery garden and palm house

The orangery garden with the Papageno fountain is also worth a visit. The orangery garden, which is separated from the main garden by a wall, was planted with citrus trees during the Baroque period. In the cold winter months, the plants were overwintered in the neighbouring palm house of the orangery. Today, the garden and the palm house are open to the public and offer plenty to discover with numerous plant and animal inhabitants.
