Tradition in Salzburg - The Salzburg Marionette Theatre

An institution in the city of Salzburg with over 100 years of tradition

Salzburg's unique puppet theatre not only delights children: in addition to plays for young audiences, numerous operas are performed in its own theatre building near the Mirabell Gardens - with figures made of wood, which are produced by professional artists with great attention to craftsmanship and detail.

The programme

500 marionettes perform operas and musicals

With more than 100 years of history, the Marionette Theatre is an institution steeped in tradition in Salzburg. The repertoire of the Marionette Theatre includes an incredible variety of operas, from Mozart to Strauss and Tchaikovsky.

The Salzburg puppet theatre version of "The Sound of Music" has also been an audience highlight since 2007. There are also children's plays such as fairy tales, which are performed in the afternoon.

In addition to the 160 performances that are staged at the theatre in Salzburg alone, the puppet theatre also tours the whole world. It comprises 10 puppeteers and around 500 marionettes.

About the history

From a hobby to a cultural highlight

How did Salzburg get its marionette theatre? Its history began in 1913 with the academic sculptor Prof. Aicher, who put all his passion for this medieval tradition into the development of a theatre with marionettes. The first performance was Mozart's singspiel Bastien und Bastienne.

The repertoire was later expanded to include numerous operas. In 1971, the Marionette Theatre in Salzburg moved to its own theatre with 350 seats. The building between the Mozarteum and the Landestheater is in the magnificent baroque style.

In 2016, the Salzburg Marionette Theatre was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
