A highlight of the Alps: the High Alpine Road on the Grossglockner
Experience unforgettable adventures on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, one of the most fascinating routes in the Austrian Alps, which leads to the highest mountain in Austria.
Grossglockner High Alpine Road
It takes just over an hour and a half from the city of Salzburg to the foot of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in the Alpine republic at 3,798 metres. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road leads from Fusch-Ferleiten in Salzburg to Heiligenblut in Carinthia and is one of the top excursion destinations in Austria, visited by thousands of tourists every summer. The High Alpine Road has been one of the most popular destinations in Austria for almost 90 years and the panoramic road is particularly popular with bikers and other motorised mountain enthusiasts. On the way up through the 36 hairpin bends, which stretch over 48 kilometres, you can take a break at one of the inns and enjoy the view as well as the local hospitality.
Passage through the high Mountains
Unique views and experiences await you along the high mountain road, which is accessible to cars, buses, motorbikes and bicycles: views of the Pasterze glacier and the snow-covered summit, wild animals such as chamois, marmots, ibex and golden eagles in their natural habitat and much more. Rest areas, information points, nine exhibitions and refreshment stops make a day trip to the Großglockner fly by.
Only accessible in summer
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is opened to traffic every year at the end of April/beginning of May and is open until the end of October/beginning of November.
