Excursion Destinations at Lake Wolfgangsee & Surroundings

Versatile Excursion Region in the Salzkammergut

Lake Wolfgangsee is an experience in summer and winter

Not far from the city of Salzburg, you can reach one of the most famous Salzkammergut lakes: Lake Wolfgangsee. Whether you want to drive up one of the mountains and see the lake district from above, take a boat trip from one place to the next, be active around the lake or head to the cosy Advent markets in Sankt Gilgen in winter: The excursion destinations on Lake Wolfgang & the surrounding area are always worth a trip!

Lake Wolfgang

The special thing about the Salzkammergut region is that it is very extensive and home to 19 marvellous lakes. These are the most beautiful in the whole of Austria - Mondsee, Traunsee, Attersee, Toplitzsee and many more. But Lake Wolfgangsee is a very special gem.

Shipping like in Imperial Times

Liner shipping on Lake Wolfgangsee was officially opened in 1873 with the maiden voyage of the 33 metre long paddle steamer "Kaiser Franz Joseph I". Today, a trip on the renovated imperial ship is a very special experience. Six motorised ships, which sail daily from May to October as well as on Advent weekends and at Easter, complete the fleet.

Sport and Relaxation

Active people get their money's worth at, on and in Lake Wolfgangsee. Swimming, hiking, walking, golfing, all kinds of water sports such as water skiing, diving, surfing, sailing as well as summer tobogganing and cycling - the range of possible activities is huge.

Advent at Lake Wolfgangsee

Alongside Salzburg's Christmas markets, the Advent markets in St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl are some of the most beautiful and authentic far and wide. The backdrop of the lake with the large lantern, the romantically decorated villages, the culinary delights on offer at the stalls and the opportunity to travel to all the Advent markets by boat make for a unique experience that you will only find on Lake Wolfgangsee.

Schafberg Railway

The Schafberg railway is also of historical value, with some of the original engines from the end of the 19th century still in operation. These are among the oldest cogwheel steam locomotives still in operation in the world.

The railway takes you from St. Wolfgang up the 1,700 metre high Schafberg, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over the mountains and lakes of the Salzkammergut.
