Hallein Salt Worlds

Excursion destination with over 2,500 years of history

Excursion to the birthplace of white gold

Hallein, Hallstatt and Altaussee - these were the three major salt mining sites on the northern edge of the Alps in Austria. The closest to the city of Salzburg is the Hallein salt mine, which introduces young and old to the history of salt in its show mine - an eventful excursion for families and tour groups. Families can also combine a trip to Hallein with a speedy ride on the Keltenblitz summer toboggan run.

Hallein Salt Worlds

Visitors of all ages will be fascinated by salt and mining on a trip to the Hallein Salt Worlds, around 15 kilometres south of Salzburg.

Our recommendation

The temperature inside the Salzbergerwerk is a constant 10 degrees Celsius. So please remember to wear warm clothing even when visiting in summer.

Adventure Trip in the Mountains

The mine railway takes you into the heart of the mountain, where you will discover the story of the "man in the salt". Continue down the two slides that take you to the underground salt lake. This is magically staged with a fascinating light and sound installation before you take the raft to the other shore and continue your journey through the mountain.

Salt Worlds for Children

Sally the Mining Duck, who takes children aged 4 to 10 into secret tunnels, offers a child-friendly programme. During the children's tour, the young visitors learn how to tap salt, find out in a vivid way what salt mining is all about and there is also a big boat trip across the underground lake.

Further Information

The Hallein Salt Mine is open all year round, except during the quiet period in January, and can only be visited on a guided tour. Details can be found at www.salzwelten.at
