Christmas market in Salzburg´s Old Town

Five weeks before Christmas, the traditional Salzburg Christkindlmarkt opens at Cathedral and Residenzplatz. One of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, it has enchanted Salzburg since the 15th century and is considered one of the most beautiful markets in the world.

During your Christmas holiday in Salzburg, experience a unique atmosphere filled with traditional handicrafts, festive Christmas tree decorations and the tempting aromas of Christmas biscuits and roasted almonds. Enjoy Austrian culinary specialities and listen to the Salzburg choirs performing festive Christmas music throughout the Christkindlmarkt.

A special highlight of Advent in Salzburg is the impressive Turmblasen. Every Thursday and Saturday, festive melodies ring out from the towers surrounding Salzburg Cathedral, performed by some of Salzburg’s most renowned brass musicians. This tradition fills the city with a unique festive atmosphere and creates an unforgettable Advent experience.

Advent Singing & Concerts in Salzburg

For over 60 years, the Salzburg Advent Singing at the Grosses Festspielhaus has been part of the city’s festive traditions. Here, the Christmas story is brought vividly to life through music and theatrical performances. Music lovers should also not miss the atmospheric Advent concerts in the historic St. Peter’s Church and the Burgsaal at Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Salzburg advent with Christ Child, Perchten and Krampus

Of course, the Christ Child and his angels also drop by on Advent Saturdays.

On 5 December, scary fellows with shaggy animal skins, rumbling bells and self-carved masks, the traditional Perchten, create a truly spooky atmosphere during Advent. At the annual Perchtenlauf in Salzburg’s old town, the evil spirits are driven away – an unforgettable experience in Salzburg’s Advent!

And on 6 December St. Nicholas and his ghoulish companion, the Krampus, stroll through the Christkindlmarkt.

Another highlight for children and adults alike is the ice skating rink on Mozartplatz, where you can skate your laps. Afterwards, a punch in the winter lounge will warm you up again.

The ice skating rink at Mozartplatz offers families a wonderful winter experience. Young and old can enjoy skating here before warming up with a hot punch in the cosy winter lounge.

Also right in Salzburg’s Old Town, another traditional Christmas market welcomes you during Advent – the Sternadvent in the Sternarkaden. This smaller and lovingly designed Christmas market stretches between Getreidegasse and Griesgasse.
