Mirabell Gardens - Salzburg's most beautiful garden

Palace and park facility in the heart of the city of Salzburg

Mirabell Palace is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the city of Salzburg, especially because of its gardens. The entire complex is a listed building and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And once you have visited Mirabell Palace yourself, you will understand why.

The Mirabell Palace

Mirabell Palace

A location for dream weddings

The view from the edge of the Mirabell Gardens towards the historic centre with the cathedral and fortress is so beautiful it serves as a popular photo image for visitors to Salzburg from all over the world. While strolling through the magnificent park and past the attractions, you may get an idea of how one may have lived here over 400 years ago.

Back then, in 1606, the Salzburg Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich had Mirabell Palace built in the heart of the city. It was meant to be a loving gift to his Salome Alt, and not least because of this story, the marble hall of the palace is always booked far in advance as a dream wedding location. The Angel Staircase alone, which leads to the wedding room, is worth seeing.

From Hotel Scherer, a walk towards the historic centre leads directly to Mirabell Palace and through the beautiful park facility, where several famous scenes from The Sound of Music were also filmed.

The Mirabell Garden

Mirabell Garden in Salzburg

The most beautiful gardens in Salzburg

The pleasure gardens behind Mirabell Palace are some of the most beautiful sights in the city of Salzburg. Their geometric basic form is typical for the baroque era. In the middle of the gardens, the Pegasus fountain with the horse sculpture forms a prominent eye-catcher and will have Sound of Music fans wallowing in memories.

On the western side of the gardens, a path leads to the hedge theatre, which is used for traditional events, especially in summer. Here, you should also take a stroll around the gnome garden, with only around half of the originally 28 gnome figures still remaining.

It is also worth visiting the rose garden south of the palace as well as the orangery, which serves as a palm house today.
