Salzburg Cathedral

Architecture, art and history will leave you in awe

The landmark of the historic centre and the backdrop of the “Jedermann”

Salzburg’s historic centre boasts a number of churches worth seeing. However, the largest and most significant of them all is Salzburg Cathedral. Its mighty dome and two towers catch the eye from far off. Every year, the centrepiece of the Salzburg Festival, the Jedermann play is performed in the cathedral square and a visit to the magnificent structure is a must on a city tour.

Our tip

The DomQuartier museum round tour incorporates part of Salzburg Cathedral and allows you to view the interior of the church from above.

Baroque jewel

Salzburg Cathedral and Cathedral Square during the Festival

Even the white facade, built from marble from the Untersberg will make visitors pause in front of the cathedral.

The years are shown on the gate commemorate the three cathedral inaugurations – 774, 1628 and 1959. This is because of multiple fires suffered by the cathedral. It was last partially destroyed by an air raid in 1944 and was rebuilt again.

Inside Salzburg Cathedral

A round tour through the inside of the cathedral opens up the entire grandeur of the sacred structure. Near the entrance, you will find the bronze baptismal font, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptised.

The splendid main organ, high dome and cathedral gates are also worth a closer look. On the left, you can go down into the crypts where remains from the two previous buildings of the cathedral are still visible.

During the Advent and Festival periods, guided tours are offered through Salzburg Cathedral at special times. On request, guided tours are available all year round.
