Lake Wolfgang

Lake Wolfgang is an experience in summer and winter

A diverse excursion region in the Salzkammergut in Austria

Not far from the city of Salzburg, you can reach one of the best-known Salzkammergut lakes. Whether you travel up to one of the mountains and view the Lakeland from above, travel by boat from one location to the next, want to get active around the lake or head for the cosy Advent markets in winter, you can organise your excursion to Lake Wolfgang entirely according to your own interests!

Lake Wolfgang

Water sports and boat trip at Lake Wolfgang

The special thing about the Salzkammergut region is that it is very extensive and is home to 19 dreamlike lakes. They are the most beautiful in all of Austria – Mondsee, Traunsee, Attersee, Toplitzsee and many more. But Lake Wolfgang is a very special pearl.

Boat trip at Lake Wolfgang, almost as if in imperial times

In 1873, the liner shipping at Lake Wolfgang was officially opened with the maiden voyage of the 33-metre long paddle steamer “Kaiser Franz Joseph I”. A trip with the renovated imperial ship is an entirely special experience today. Six motorboats travelling daily from May to October as well as on Advent weekends and at Easter complete the fleet.

Water sports and activities around the lake

Activity lovers will get their money’s worth at and around Lake Wolfgang. Swimming, hiking, golfing, water sports, diving, surfing, sailing, summer tobogganing, cycling – the range of activities is huge.

Advent at Lake Wolfgang

In addition to Salzburg’s Christmas markets, the Advent markets in St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl are some of the most beautiful and original to be found far and wide. The backdrop of the lake with the large lantern, the romantically decorated villages, the culinary offerings at the stalls and the option to travel to all Christmas markets by boat culminate in a unique experience that can only be found at Lake Wolfgang.

Schafberg Railway

Mountain station of the Schafberg Railway

The Schafberg railway also possesses historical value, where parts of the original machines from the end of the 19th century are still in operation. These are some of the oldest cogwheel steam locomotives in the world still operated today.

The train takes you from St. Wolfgang to the Schafberg mountain, which is over 1,700 metres high and from where you can enjoy a magnificent view over the mountains and lakes of the Salzkammergut.
