Grossglockner & Untersberg

Excursions to the high mountains from the city of Salzburg

Want to make an incredible trip to Alpine heights? In just 10 minutes, you can reach Salzburg's highest local mountain, the Unterberg by cable car – the summit station lies at an altitude of almost 1,800 metres. And Austria's highest mountain can't go unmentioned on a holiday in Salzburg's Alps: the Grossglockner with its fantastic 48km-long scenic road.

The unique Grossglockner High Alpine Road

Enjoy the view of Salzburg and the Alps from the Untersberg

The Untersberg is a unique specimen in the mountain backdrop surrounding the city of Salzburg. The mountain massif towers up in the west of the city and its history is steeped in legend. Since 1961, the Untersberg railway service has brought visitors and hikers up the mountain from Grödig/St. Leonhard. An entire 1,320 metres of altitude difference is covered on the journey with the cable car. At the top, you are rewarded with a magnificent panorama: with good visibility, the view extends across the Alps to the Hochkönig, into the Salzkammergut and the Chiemsee. Good footwear and suitable clothing are definitely worth considering for the hiking path.

Proficient mountaineers naturally climb the Untersberg on foot instead of with the cable car. Several paths lead upwards, which require absolute surefootedness, a head for heights and physical fitness under all circumstances!

Grossglockner Hauptstrasse

It is roughly one and a half hours from the city of Salzburg to the foot of the Grossglockner, which, at 3,798m, is the highest mountain of the Alpine republic. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road runs from Fusch-Ferleiten in Salzburg to Heiligenblut in Carinthia and every summer, thousands of tourists descend upon it to make it one of the top destinations in Austria. Unique views and experiences await you along the Hochgebirgsstrasse, which is accessible to cars, buses, motorcycles and bikes: the view of the Pasterze Glacier and the snow-covered peak, wild animals such as chamoises, marmots, ibexes or golden eagles in their natural habitat and much more. Rest stops, info points, nine exhibits and refreshment points will make a day trip to the Grossglockner pass by in no time.

Opening hours of the High Alpine Road

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road admits traffic at the end of April/beginning of May every year and is open until the end of October/beginning of November.
