The Salzburg Marionette Theatre

An institution in the city of Salzburg with over 100 years of tradition

A tradition in Salzburg -The Salzburg Marionette Theatre

Salzburg’s unique Marionette Theatre thrills more than only the children: in addition to plays for the young audience, the separate theatre house near the Mirabell Gardens shows numerous operas – with wooden figures created by professional artists with a great passion for craftsmanship and attention to detail.

With its more than 100-year history, the Marionette Theatre is a Salzburg institution steeped in tradition. The programme features an unbelievable variety of operas, from Mozart through Strauss to Tchaikovsky.

One audience highlight since 2007 has also been the marionette theatre version of The Sound of Music. This is joined by children’s plays such as fairytales, which are performed in the afternoon.

In addition to 160 presentations, which are performed in the theatre in Salzburg alone, the Marionette Theatre also tours around the entire world. It includes 10 puppeteers and around 500 marionettes.

About the history

Performance at the Marionette Theatre Salzburg

From hobby to cultural highlight

How did Salzburg get its marionette theatre? Its story began in 1913 with the academic sculptor Prof. Aicher, who put all his passion for this medieval tradition into developing a theatre with marionettes. The first performance was Mozart’s musical comedy Bastien und Bastienne.

Later, the repertoire was expanded to include numerous operas, with the marionette theatre moving into its own 350-seater theatre in 1971. The building between the Mozarteum and State Theatre is in the magnificent baroque style.

In 2016, the Marionette Theatre Salzburg was added to UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
